1 Peter 5:5-6
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

  • The pathway into GOD-SIZED BLESSINGS is humility!

Jesus on Life-altering Humility (Luke 14:1-27)

Luke 14:1
One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.

  • Carefully watched – paratereo – to inspect scrupulously and insidiously

Luke 14:2-6
2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. 5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” 6 And they had nothing to say.

Matthew 12:10; Psalm 107:20

Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

  1. Honors GOD’S WAYS.

1 Samuel 10, 15:12

1 Samuel 15:23
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.

Luke 14:3-4
3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

  • Humility causes us to value GOD’S WAYS more than OUR WAYS.

2. Considers PEOPLE’S INTERESTS.

Ephesians 4:1-3
1 . . . I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

1 Peter 3:7-8
7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. 8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.

2 Chronicles 26:3-5
3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years . . . He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.

2 Chronicles 26:16
But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

  • Humility causes us to CONSIDER God’s interests and the interests of others instead of living COMBATIV

Luke 14:7-9
7 When he (Jesus) noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.

3. Prioritizes GOD’S CALLING.

Luke 14:12-14
12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Questions:

  1. What did you hear from the Holy Spirit?
  2. What will you do because of it?
  3. How can we pray for you?
