- Mentor – a trusted counselor or guide
Biblical Examples of Mentorship:
- Jethro and Moses (Exodus 18:14-26)
- Barnabas and Paul (Acts 11)
- Jesus at the Temple (Luke 2:45-46)
Luke 2:45-46 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
- A mentor should serve as our guide but should never replace our God.
How to Grow Through Mentorship
1. Ready Yourself
- Humility – Recognize we need help.
- Coachability – Be held accountable to what we’re taught.
- Discipline – Be willing to do the hard work to grow.
Romans 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (NLT) 26So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.
2. Pray and Pursue
Philippians 4:6 (NLT) Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
3.Submit and Strive
1 Timothy 4:10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
4. Pass It On
Luke 16:10
2 Timothy 2:2 (NASB) The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Psalm 71: 17-18 17 Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. 18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
Psalm 145:4 One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.
